This page was entered from memory in August 2020, over 60 years after the event. Clearly my memory has faded.

Met up with Vincent Josef at the Dog in the afternoon after school. First thing he said was “do you know that the Agong is dead?”.

Hah hah! April Fool! But no, he was right. Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the first ever Agong, died today.

Brother James [our teacher] has a funny idea. Our ability to express ourselves in English (except for me, not our native languages) is not good. So he handed out some exercise books and asked us to write a page in them every day. What should we write? Whatever we want, as long as it was grammatically correct and made some sort of sense.

I really liked this idea. At the start I invented stories out of my surroundings, but fairly quickly I started writing about things that really happened. I see this as the start of this diary.
