This plant grows from a tuber. I thought that this was a kind of lily, but that doesn't seem to be correct. Conceivably it's a Dracunculus vulgaris, which is related to the Arum lily, though the photos of the leaves I've seen on the web don't quite match. Leonne tells me the same, and that they smell like rotting meat, something that I haven't observed yet.
The photos of the root detail show the plants intermixed with some violets, which obviously aren't related.
