When we moved in to our house in Dereel in July 2007, we had a grove of large evergreen trees (I think some Pittosporum species) to the north-east of the house. It was ideal for sitting under on milder summer days, and the view upwards reminded us of the vaults of a cathedral, so we called the area the “cathedral”.

Unfortunately, it didn't last. The trees were old, and summer 2008-2009 in particular proved too much for the trees. One by one, branch by branch, they came down, and at the time of writing (August 2011) there's only a single tree left, and it's only a single stem. We're replacing them by silver birches, but it'll be a while before they look like trees.
