This page shows the results of a series of test photos I took on 2 August 2009, mainly to compare results between the Olympus E-510 and E-30. I also had a Kodak M1093 IS camera floating around, so I tried that too.
The photos were all taken from the same distance. The Olympus photos were all taken with the same lens, an Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm F2.8-4.0 SWD set at 12 mm focal length (corresponding to 24 mm on a 35 mm camera). The Kodak photos were taken at minimum focal length, 6.3 mm, corresponding to about 35 mm on a 35 mm camera.
All but one of the photos were taken at maximum resolution: 3648 x 2736 (9,98 MP) for the E-510 and the Kodak, and 4032 x 3024 (12.2 MP) for the E-30. The one exception is the Kodak at 6400 ISO. At this sensitivity the camera restricts the maximum size to 2048 x 1536 (3.16 MP).
These combinations mean that the actual resolution of the cutout varies: the rectangle around the budgerigar has a resolution of 165x79 on the Kodak, 128x62 on the E-30, and 116x54 on the E-510. The handwritten labels are about 82x30 on the Kodak, 61x21 on the E-30, and 56x19 on the E-510. Clearly there's no hope of being able to read the text.
