This is some kind of a bulb. It bloomed relatively late in the year, but that could have been because of inadequate watering. Laurel Gordon thinks it might be a Tritonia, but she has only seen these photos. CJ Ellis' friend Sue, whose surname I still don't know, thinks that they're Watsonia.
This year we had adequate watering, and the flowers still didn't come up until mid-summer, so presumably that's their season. Here are some more photos.
