Dear COSIG, At somewhat short notice I have been called upon to produce a Mexican dinner in the bay area. Can anybody give me some addresses where I can get ingredients? They go somewhat beyond what you can find at normal supermarkets. It tends to have most of what you're looking for. There's also a little market next to a great Mexican restaurant in Mt. View. The market is called El Calderon Bodega, next to El Calderon restaurant, on, yes, El Calderon Avenue. Quite near Grant Ave/Whisman road, which is close to Highway 85. It's not too difficult to find. Phone # 415-969-7635. Good luck! La Costena on Old Middlefield and Rengstorff in Mountain View has nearly everything Mexican you heart could desire. There's also a Mom and Pop Mexican grocery store on California Ave. between Rengstorff and Stierlin (now Shoreline Blvd.) that would have anything La Costena doesn't have. La Costena is known for their FANTASTIC burritos they sell out of the back of the store. QUITE popular among Sun emplyees, and the Mom and Pop store have an entire room full of pinatas if you ever need an unusual birthday gift. Their food is good, but I'm not sure how extensive the grocery store is. There is also a store next door, but I've never been in it. Also, if you are feeding 6-8, I have done a fabulous leg of lamb called Michuacan Leg of Lamb. I remember it as a butterflied leg with marinade and then roasted, got rave reviews. I think I used the Sunset Mexican cookbook. Used black beans without fat, etc. for a very healthy and delicious meal. Have fun! Oh yes, jicama slices soaked in fresh lime juice, sprinkled with red pepper makes a fresh beginning on lettuce leaves or cilantro on the side. Greg: There are a whole bunch of Mexican markets in San Jose...Go down 280 and get off at the Almaden exit, turn right on Almaden and you are effectively in the heart of the Hispanic area. Go down Almaden about 2 traffic lights and turn right, I think, and you should see quite a few "mom & pop" markets in the area, and they all carry the kinds of stuff you are looking for. B. Your Groggy-ness: I finally grabbed my dictionary after my last message and discovered, "It means 'Turkey'!". I went looking for the Ancho chilies for you last night. Luckey's had the Pasillo but not the Ancho. They also had a bottled Mole sauce from Mexico that was made from Ancho, Pasillo & Mulato chilies. When I find something like that for a dish I have never made, I grab it for standby and also as a reference point to see if I can do it better. There is a really good Mexican grocery store on Race, near The Alameda. But I did not get the name. Sorry. It should be very easy to find. From 880 go East on The Alameda, turn right onto Race and it is a couple of blocks. Where did you get a request for turkey? That is a very uncommon dish in Mexico. Usually it is Chicken Mole. Had that many times. Chilies & Chocolate are not unusual. Perfect marriage. Infact that is what Moctezuma (Montezuma II), the last Aztec Emperor was drinking in his favorite silver mug when he granted an audience to Cortez. Even saw the Frugal Gourmet making it the other day with Chocolate Ybarra & Pasillo chili powder. |Coma con mucho gusto! Greg, you can probably find all of the ingredients you are looking for at "Tropicana Market" located on the corner of Story and King Roads in San Jose. From Cupertino take 280 toward San Jose and it will be the first exit after the 101 intersection. Look for it about 2 blocks after takind the exit on your right hand side. Good luck, Jorge.
