Needed Jim; Since you like places without atmosphere here is one you should not miss. proclaimed by "gourmet" magazine as the best chinese food in the united states. it's Hunan on kearny st. i'm not sure of the address but it's north of sacramento st on the west side. The place seats about thirty and if you're real lucky they'll seat you in the old coat closet ( the best seat in the house) or at the counter so you can watch them cook. they have a larger place on sansome but i don't think it's as good. you always have to stand in line out front. their smoked dishes are great and the food tends to be on the "hot & spicy" side. order the onion cakes as an appetizer. if you need more specific directions give me a call....john wankel loc 4 x5736 p.s. the place is inexpensive, dinner for two < $20.00 -------------------- ORIGINAL 02 Oct 84 16:17 From MAIL (WAITE_JIM @COMM2) 3: Recommendation For Chinese Restaurant In S.F. They are in the Richmond District and are quite reasonable. They tend to be a bit crowded on weekends, so you might want to get there early, especially if you have a large group. Riverside Chinese Cuisine, 3614 Balboa St (nr. 37th Ave), 221-2211 Specialty is seafood Ocean Restaurant, 726 Clement St. (nr. 8th Ave.), 221-3351 Specialty is seafood, especially fresh from their tank New Ocean Restaurant, 239 Clement St. (nr. 3rd Ave.), 668-1688 A second location started by the same people who opened up Ocean Restaurant Tong Kiang Restaurant, 3148 Geary Blvd. (at Spruce St.), 752-4440 5827 Geary Blvd.,(nr. 22nd Ave.), 387-8273 These are two of the three Tong Kiang's in SF. Very spicy HAKKA food. Just about everything I had there were tasty and good. YET HUA (or YET HWA) on Clement. Seems to be very popular with a lot of my friends, there is also one in the PIER #39, nicer atmosphere, more expensive, but not spicy hot kinds of food. YANK SING on Broadway. There is also a more elegant and new YANK SING in the financial district, seems to be popular for lunches. GOLDEN DRAGON cafe, not the restaurant, in Chinatown. Very good roast duck, wonton noodle, Hongkong style chowmein. Not at all glamorous, in fact, it is a pretty ugly place, but I think they serve pretty good and very inexpensive food. The Golden Dragon restaurant across the street from the cafe is owned by the same people, it is more elegant, have more selection of dishes, and more expensive. ASIA GARDEN and HONGKONG for deem sum. This place is a real hole-in-the-wall, and prides itself on having intimidating and rude waiters constantly asking if you're done yet so someone else can have your table. HOWEVER, the food is GREAT and not overly expensive (I think most dishes are $4-6). You have to walk through a small steamy kitchen to get into the "dining" area. Also, if you would like to try a vegetarian place, GREENS of Fort Mason is good for lunch. Reservations advised. They serve dinnerr only Fri and Sat, and the wait can be up to 2 months unless you happen to catch a cancellation. Well, living in Boston, it's surprising that I can actually reply to your mail message..... But I lived in San Francisco for five years and adore Chinese food. I really miss San Francisco's Chinese restaurants because although Boston has a lot of good restaurants, I've found the Chinese food does not come close to SF's. The best the restaurant I've ever eaten in, unequivocally, would have to be The Hunan on Sansome St. (I worked near there and really miss those wonderful lunches). You must like very hot food, however to really appreciate this place but it really is wonderful. The one drawback is the atmosphere, call it "Early Warehouse" complete with a huge banner proclaiming "NO MSG IN OUR FOOD", which is a great thing but is pretty tacky as far as interior decorating goes. The food more than makes up for the lack of atmosphere. It's fabulous!!! There is another restaurant that is the original of this one, I believe it's in North Beach, but it's soooo very tiny that I'd advise going to the Sansome St. one. The other very good restaurant is called The Kirin on Geary Blvd. way out near 25th Avenue. This one is great as well but I think the Hunan is better. Let me know if you go to these places and how you like them. I'd also be very interested to hear what other people mention as being good restaurants. It was surprising to me that I didn't think the best ones were in China Town. Although there were good places to go for Dim Sum in China Town. Don't miss the HUNAN!!!! Laura Moss
